QCS service in a paper mill not only provides the improvement of quality measurement and control performance after initial commissioning, but also it can help identify process related problems and remove bottle necks for further control performance improvement. This will be achieved by combining QCS product and paper making knowledge to trouble shoot upstream process problem and possible control loop or valve malfunction. For paper maker, the benefit would be the improved machine runnability and increased production while maintaining high paper quality.
In this article, we have illustrated several mill process troubleshooting examples using QCS as a tool in addition to other off-line analysis tools from a state of art fine paper machine in Asia. Both authors have spent an extensively long time after the machine startup for after market QCS service. From the day-to-day contact with mill production managers and operators, there are many cases that QCS has been used as a valuable tool to identify process problems, helping production increase while maintaining high paper quality. Later in the service period, the machine made several speed records with excellent stability.
