Modern paper machines are often equipped with multiple sets of cross-machine direction (CD) actuators. Currently, each set of actuators is used to control different sheet property profiles independently. In reality, one set of actuators could change several sheet properties and one sheet property may be affected by multiple sets of actuators. The independent CD control may not handle the coupling effectively. Multivariable CD control is needed to achieve optimal profile performance for this type of processes. In this paper, we will discuss how to implement multiple-input and multiple-output CD control applications. Various practical aspects such as the system architecture, configuration, process modeling, constraints handling, mode transition, user interfaces and application examples are explored.
