This paper reports different applications of multivariable predictive control (MPC) technology in the paper mill. We discuss the where, the how, and the why of MPC that are now taking a firm foot hold in the pulp and paper industry, and present results using recent mill examples. Specifically, we explore the benefits of MPC controllers in the various papermaking processes in comparison to the traditional approaches.
