This paper traces the development of the quality control systems from its conception in the early 50's and looks atthe changing role of QCS during different periods in its history. Today, has QCS become a commodity ofundifferentiated value? Or does it still have a unique ability to serve as a competitive advantage to reduce costs,improve quality, and increase efficiency? The best answers we could find seem to be a function of the changing roleof QCS in its own development history.
