Systematic and long-term process analysis techniques have been used prior, during, and after rebuilds in order to minimize process and product variability from stock prep to the reel. This paper discusses the methods, tools, and process analysis techniques in order to monitor, analyze, and improve process performance. We present the results of the variability reduction effort with a mill example. In particular, troubleshooting, measurement and control of drying induced variability both in MD and CD, the tension variation of paper created by the combined effect of moisture variability and straining during drying are discussed and results presented.
