Today with the trend to increase production speeds above 1000 fpm, there is a need to improve the coating application methods. Primer applications for the extrusion coating process consisted of Direct Forward Gravure, Direct Reverse Gravure, Offset Gravure and Smooth Roll Transfer coaters. At the higher speeds, the ability to apply low coat weights by the existing coaters has become greatly limited. To produce the desired results at the increased operating speeds, new coater variations must be employed. The primary goal is to determine the operating parameters and required modifications for each type of coater to achieve low coat weights above 1000 fpm.
