The paper recycling process is continually plagued by unwanted non-fibrous materials that cause a large variety of problems in pulping and papermaking. These materials are broadly defined as stickies and are classified into two categories according to their size: microstickies and macrostickies. The quality of recycled and deinked pulps is assessed by the number and size of macrostickies. Methods for measuring the contaminants are diverse and vary from mill to mill. We have evaluated a number of these methods on a variety of recycled furnishes and identified their strengths and weaknesses.
