To widen the use of deinked pulps to the manufacture of value-added papers, strength and optical properties of deinked fibers must be improved. The objective of this work was to optimize the TEMPO oxidation reaction to maximize strength and optical properties of deinked pulps. The optimal conditions were then used to prepare oxidized pulps that were mixed with thermomechanical pulp (TMP) to evaluate their impacts on strength and optical properties of handsheets. Results showed that optimal combinations of TEMPO, sodium hypochlorite, and sodium bromide improved tensile, burst, brightness and ERIC values. However, tear was reduced. Results also showed that handsheets containing pulps treated with TEMPO showed better strength and optical properties than handsheets made without oxidized deinked pulps.
