Rotating equipment in the paper industry can operate at elevated temperatures, rpm, and in some cases nip pressures. Most of the cracks found in/on these rotating components are the result of some type of fatigue. Many nondestructive examination methods: such as magnetic particle (MT), ultrasonic (UT), acoustic emission (AE), and liquid penetrant (PT) have been used to detect these fatigue cracks. Of these methods, acoustic emission is recognized as a “volumetric” examination method, as AE examines the entire structure in one examination. Using the acoustic emission technology as an initial inspection method, a technique called Acoustic Screening© (AS), may be employed on rolls in or out of the machine.
