To produce pulp, mills have to mix chips from various origins, types and sizes. Origins are two. Sawmill chips were obtained from the outer part of the tree, the mature wood. Second origin is from roundwood chips. Both origins were studied in the project and mixed. Firstly mixing could be done on chip level, before defibering. Results showed higher proportion of shives, brightness, fibre length and tear index. No important impact on energy consumption could be identified. Secondly, mixing could be done on fibre, after defibering. There were no interactions between fibres during refining, giving properties similar as if refining was performed separately. Finally mixing could be before third refining, this is what happen with post or reject refining. Again, there were no interactions between fibres, giving properties similar as if post refining was performed separately.
