Water-based barrier coatings offer a route to improve the performance of bio-based polymer films and trays, allowing them to compete with polyolefins. Water-based barrier coatings are amenable to existing coating equipment including roll, size press, blade and curtain coaters. This paper will illustrate the effects of pigment aspect ratio and volume concentration on barrier performance in common water-based polymer coatings.
