A breakthrough in calendering of paper and board is introduced. It features a new metal belt calendering process, where a one-meter-long heated nip plasticizes paper on both sides, producing flat, smooth surfaces, and resulting in excellent printability and appearance. Good profiling capability as well as unprecedented preservation of caliper, bulk and stiffness are other benefits. The new metal belt calendering process – called ValZone - is ideal for precalendering of coated board., where it can help boost production by 20-40% by removing bottlenecks, such as a Yankee dryer or a wet stack. Other potential application areas include uncoated fine papers, uncoated board, precalendering of coated fine papers and other similar bulk-sensitive grades.
