Existing coating formulations based on silica pigments such as silica gels and fumed silica are greatly used in the production of high quality inkjet papers. One limiting factor of these formulations is that they can only be used at low solids (around 20% solids). Another factor that complicates their application is that most current formulations require the addition of special binders such as polyvinyl alcohol. This paper introduces a technology consisting of a coating formulation comprised of nano structured pigments for inkjet papers designed to overcome the limitations of the existing technologies. One differentiating factor of this formulation is that it is high solids (up to 50% solids) and contains self binding pigments in a ready to use formulation. The rheology of the formulation gives very good runnability on various size presses and coaters.
