Among data related systems in pulp and paper mills one type of system is generally missing. This system can be called process diagnostics system. The main application area for this kind of systems is tackling of process problems. The main requirements for process diagnostics system are that on-line data are available in one place, data can be accessed directly, cleansing and preprocessing of data is fast, flexible and reliable and some simple (multivariate) analysis methods are available. When the system fulfills these prerequisites it can be used by process engineers. Process knowledge is far more important than deep theoretical understanding about statistical analysis methods.
