A description of the current packaging labels and pricing for a sample set of retail copy paper is presented. Increased use of high levels of OBA, have resulted in larger, more noticeable variation when comparing brightness against price in retail papers. Measurements are made using the three internationally acceptable methods for brightness measurement. These results show the inconsistency in applying brightness measurement standards in commerce. Three primary variables among the brightness standards are presented: measurement geometry, fluorescence and UV level. Each of these variables is discussed and analyzed instrumentally including directional versus diffuse geometry and UV level C versus D65. Consistent application and communication of geometry, fluorescence and UV level will improve communication and reduce variability in package labeling.
