The carbohydrate content in the black liquor during an industrial birch kraft batch cook was successfully mapped. The concentration of xylose in the black liquor peeked at the end of the cook at about 6.5 g/l.
Four black liquor samples from different parts of the birch cook were chosen as xylan sources in the sorption study. Two series of sorption experiments were performed in autoclaves with laboratory washed, unbleached, never-dried industrial Scandinavian softwood pulps from two different mills as cellulose sorbents. A liquor to wood ratio of 6:1, temperature 130°C, and sorption time 120 minutes were used throughout the study. The OH -concentration was adjusted to 0.216M in the first series, and to 0.175M in the second using NaOH. A reference based on water, NaOH and Na2CO3, was also produced for each series.
