The traditional paper industry approach, evident in many market pulp and integrated mill data, is to evaluate pulp by graphing handsheet properties versus freeness. These beater curves provide descriptive information, but is it what you need? This presentation delves into this question by looking at what is the best approach to describing pulp properties for the papermaker in both integrated and non-integrated paper mills. It starts with the factors that determine pulp properties. Fundamental pulp properties, their measurement and how they relate to paper characteristics are reviewed. This background is incorporated into a pulp evaluation approach that focuses on the ability of a pulp to deliver the key paper properties needed. This approach is compared to a variety of market pulp datasheets. It is also applied to an integrated pulp and paper mill by reviewing the testing needed for pulp mill control versus the information needed by papermakers.
