In order to reduce manufacturing cost in papermaking, many companies are focusing on ways to reduce their energy costs, and for some this also includes a goal to become fossil fuel-free. Wisconsin is the number one paper producing state in the Nation, and we have developed very successful models to deploy both best practices and emerging technologies to save energy through our Focus on Energy Program. Based on our successful model, the U.S. DOE selected Wisconsin as the first state in the Nation to further promote energy efficiency and duplicate our models elsewhere. We have developed some great success stories in Wisconsin on how to reduce energy costs in a timely manner by addressing energy efficiency (demand-side).

This paper will describe several key elements of the statewide Focus on Energy program (“FOCUS”), including custom and prescriptive cash-back incentives, the industrial staffing grant program, and deployment of emerging technologies in the paper industry through CleanTech Partners, a not-for-profit organization launched by FOCUS in 2003. Quantified energy saving results and other success stories will be shared.
