One often overlooked and commonly misunderstood contributor to inconsistent machine runnability is the press section. Immediately upon installation, press fabric properties are constantly changing affecting the way they perform. Fabric openness and compressibility will change during the initial hours while over time the various operating parameters combine to degrade a fabric’s uniformity through wear and contamination. This paper lists the various sources of variability which exist in the press section as well as some recommended best practices to minimize them.
