Stock prep refiner systems are the last opportunity to impact the physical properties of the fiber. To monitor refining, multiple process variables and finished product specifications are used to provide feedback for refiner set points. In addition, many control strategies are employed to distribute the energy applied during refining. This paper will review the process variables that have the greatest impact and those that contribute the most to establishing proper fiber development. The use of proper control strategies can greatly improve energy efficiency and provide consistent fiber quality.
