In this work, a dynamic first principle model for the paper drying process is developed. The modeling methodology uses object oriented concepts of ModelicaTM language. For modeling, the drying machine is divided into components such as web (paper), canvas and cylinders. The dynamic models of these components are represented as lumped parameter systems and connected with each other to model the entire paper drying process. This object oriented approach helps in developing generic framework for modeling any kind of paper dryer. The developed model is tuned using steady state industrial data available in literature [1] and the tuned model is able to predict web temperature and moisture fraction along the dryer section within in the range of 2C and 0.09 respectively. Simulation studies are carried out to study the effect of grade change and other process variables on the final moisture of the paper. The novel approach of modeling the paper dryer as lumped parameter system reduced the numerical complexity of the model and can be used as a decision support tool for managing grade transitions in paper machine dryer.
