Uncontrolled microbial growth in coating slurries can negatively impact the quality of the finished paper or board through the formation of streaks or scratches and reduced print quality. Spoilage of additives such as starch and polymers can also have a detrimental impact on the performance of these materials. Traditional monitoring techniques do not allow for early detection of microbial growth, thus preventing diagnosis and treatment at the early stages of the spoilage process. Innovative, pro-active monitoring strategies are now available to detect spoilage and prevent damage to coatings and additives. Case studies will be presented to demonstrate the use of these pro-active strategies to maintain the performance of the coated sheet and minimize raw material losses associated with disposal of contaminated materials.
