Basis Weight is a key target in the production of paper. Variability in this sheet measurement is an excellent indicator of product quality and it may also be a key indicator of machine performance.
All modern QCS technologies create several performance indices that are available, but not necessarily visible, tousers. This paper examines the usefulness of QCS generated indices for the detection of product quality problems and discusses how performance indices related to Machine Direction variability, such as the EVI (EnTechVariabilityIndex), provide additional insight.
What will be concluded is that product quality indices are a good measure of relative performance of a given machine and are good troubleshooting tools, but they may not be strong measures of absolute process performance.
