Use of mineral in uncoated board and packaging grades has been largely limited due to the negative impact of filler on strength properties. However, there are significant benefits in the areas of drainage, drying, and productivity which can be recognized if the board producer can incorporate even low levels of filler. A novel, starch treated kaolin has shown promise in commercial trials at a Southern US linerboard mill. At only 4% loading in the base ply, the machine was able to speed up over 110 fpm representing a substantial volume of incremental production. At the higher speed, the resulting linerboard showed no statistical reduction in edgewise compression strength relative to the unfilled control references.
