Papermakers are continually challenged to meet production goals. Identifying manufacturing bottlenecks is now paramount for increasing machine efficiency. Since the production rate is often dictated by the moisture content entering the dryers, press section operation is critical to production and machine efficiency. Increased press solids reduce the water load on the dryers and therefore positively impact machine runnability. A new approach to enhanced press section performance, which utilizes site-specific mechanical and operational optimization in conjunction with a novel press dewatering chemistry, is discussed. Laboratory and mill data are presented as well.
