Ventilation air is a utility just like steam, water, and compressed air needed to produce paper and is addressed in TIP 0404-50, Paper Machine Room Ventilation Guidelines. Previous issues of the TIP covered the basics of ventilation and presented multiple options but provided little direction. The latest revision establishes target levels for temperature and humidity levels throughout the machine room, and provides a method of determining the ventilation requirements for a wide range of machines. Instead of relying on the number of building air changes, the TIP is based on heat and humidity loads according to paper grade, speed, and stock temperature. Performance indices are suggested for comparison to other machines.
