POWERPOINT ONLY
- The drivers for a business transformation are outlined. Adding biofuel and/or biochemical production makes pulp and paper mills more profitable and relevant to society. Mills have excellent skills and capabilities. Financial challenges are greater than technical challenges.
- Key elements include sustainable land use, more efficient mills, adding an adjacent biomass biorefinery , using half of the wasted hemicellulose, and getting ~30% more energy from black liquor
- A 1580 ton per day pulp mill can co-produce up to 83 million gpy of biofuel. The US Pulp and paper industry can produce up to 7 billion gpy of biofuel, which is 40% of the 2007 EISA target of 16 billion gpy by 2022.
- The only viable alternative is to see the bulk of the pulp and paper industry slowly move offshore.
