Mills are looking at wood based and other alternative fuels to reduce natural gas and fuel oil usage in their lime kilns although favorable natural gas pricing during the recent recession has reduced the urgency to make this change. Regardless if the alternative fuel is ground pet coke, lignin, ground wood, sawdust, tall oil, turpentine, methanol, etc., the fuel system must be designed to either prevent or contain and safely vent a deflagration and therefore limit the pressure rise in the system. The NFPA Standards and Recommended Practices detail the requirements for explosion prevention systems and explosion protection by deflagration venting. There have been some changes within the last few years and their impact on system design for alternative fuels is important.
