The use of recovered paper in paper grades of higher quality is limited by the quantity of impurities brought in with the raw material. Stickies which originate from adhesive applications and are included in paper products are the most important source. These stickies have to be removed from deinked pulp so that the quality of the produced new paper can reach similar quality as paper made of virgin fibers. The aim of the investigation is the improvement of recyclability by evaluating the behavior of adhesive applications during stock preparation. A tool for this evaluation is a data base about the recycling behavior of different types of adhesive applications in graphic paper products.
During the investigation INGEDE Method 12 appears as the most suitable lab method to obtain information about sticky quantity and sticky particle size distribution. This is essential, because all stickies with a size lower than 2 000 µm equivalent circle diameter cannot be removed completely by industrial screening applications. By collecting knowledge about catalogues, magazines and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) in laboratory scale, some criteria for benchmarking the recyclability will be established. These criteria are used for the development of a scoring system like the Deinkability Score of ERPC.
