The world’s first commercial black liquor gasification plant started up in December 1996. The plant went into commercial operation immediately after start up, enabling the mill to increase capacity with reduced capital investment compared with alternatives. Since then, the plant has undergone a series of improvements to increase availability, efficiency and capacity, and to streamline maintenance activities and lower maintenance costs. The last 18 months of operation ending November 2008 , showed 95% availability.
