In Lime Recovery Kiln Operations at Kraft Pulp Mills, energy consumption is quite significant. Retrofitting an existing kiln with a better insulated refractory lining is an excellent means to increase operating efficiency & reduce fuel costs. However, it is critical that the mechanics of the kiln design be carefully evaluated. These efforts should include studies to determine any potential negative impacts of additional &/or positional changes in loading. Evaluation of current kiln shell mechanical operating characteristics & condition is also necessary. A key factor to success is selection of the insulating refractory materials. The refractory material must add to insulation while minimizing installation costs and providing reliable long-term service life. This paper will discuss the necessary kiln mechanical review and introduce accepted/traditional kiln insulation methods as well as new concepts.
