Chains are installed in many lime kilns to extract heat from the combustion gas to dry lime mud. Effective heat transfer in the chain section of a lime kiln is therefore of great importance in lime kiln operation. A systematic study has been carried out through laboratory experiments and computer simulations to obtain a basic understanding of how heat is transferred in the chain section. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient for a chain ring in lime mud deceases markedly with an increase in mud solids content, from 320 W/m2C at 70% solids to 170 W/m2C as the mud is completely dried. For a given chain mass, chains with thinner rings are more effective in mud drying than those with thicker rings. Chains made of carbon steel provide better heat transfer than those made of stainless steel due to the higher thermal conductivity of the carbon steel.
