This paper describes sulfite thick liquor gasification experiments performed in the Chemrec pressurized oxygen-blown gasification pilot plant in Piteå, Sweden. The experiments were motivated by an on-going project development aiming to build a plant for production of motor fuels at the Domsjö biorefinery in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.
Sulfite thick liquor was gasified successfully during 27 h at varying reactor load, temperature and pressure. The lower reactivity normally associated with sulfite liquors in recovery boilers, leading to lower equipment capacity, was not observed at the gasification conditions studied. Actual reactor capacity could not be determined since obtainable reactor load was limited by fouling of liquor pre-heater surfaces.
The cold gas efficiency obtainable in a commercial scale gasifier was estimated to be 66-70%. Carbon conversion is estimated to be complete or almost complete from the visual appearance of the green liquor. Green liquor sulfidity is significantly lower than for a recovery boiler due to the fact that approximately 70% of the sulfur is contained in the synthesis gas as hydrogen sulfide. The green liquor produced has close to 100% sulfur reduction efficiency.
