The properties of lime mud have large implications on the energy efficiency of a mill associated with kiln operation. Real-time knowledge of solids content and lime mud quality allow for feedback optimization of the mud washer and feed forward control of the kiln. An online analyzer system for lime mud solids and other non-process elements has been developed. The system is based on a near infrared spectrometer coupled to an on-axis illumination probe head installed over the lime mud conveyor. This system is installed just downstream of the mud filter and upstream of the kiln, continuously measuring lime mud properties. Near infrared calibration methodology is described and analyzer calibration results and in-process time series data are presented.
