Recausticizing clarifier technology was reinvestigated using state-of-the-art computer flow simulation with the objective of increasing their performance to the level of the available filtration technology. Two and three dimensional computation fluid dynamic models were created of conventional green liquor clarifiers and alternative designs were optimized using the computational tools to determine tank circulation characteristics. Feedwell and bustlepipe design constraints included tank geometry, ability to handle entrained solids, gases and to be supportable with the existing structures. Several clarifiers have been retrofitted with New Feedwells and Bustlepipe systems which yielded significant reductions in Non Process Elements (NPE’s) throughout the liquor cycle.
