The pressurized, oxygen-blown, development plant (DP-1) in Piteå, Sweden has during the first four years of operation been in operation more than11 000 hours. The so far flared raw syngas will from August 2010 be converted to BioDME through a novel conversion process being erected downstream the gasification plant. The plant construction and operation is part of the The BioDME Project partly financed by EU:s FP 7 program and the Swedish Energy Agency. The BioDME will be used as diesel fuel substitute for DME adopted heavy duty trucks which will operate in a fleet test during about 2 ½ years. The project will thus show the whole chain from biomass conversion to fuels and the use of the fuel in dedicated vehicles. DME generated from black liquor in pulp mills shows very high CO2 reduction potential as well as one of the highest Well to Wheel efficiencies. There are also advanced plans to build a semi-commercial sized black liquor to methanol/DME plant at a sulphite mill in Sweden.
