High solids black liquor firing offers the potential of increasing kraft pulp production when there are limitations as to the flue gas volumetric capacity of a recovery boiler and the possibility of providing energy and environmental benefits as well. The technical feasibility of concentrating black liquor using an electromagnetic induction heating screw was evaluated and more than 90% solids was achieved. The approach eliminates the barrier related to pumping limits caused by excessive viscosity, which is unsuitable for conventional concentrators and crystallisers. A preliminary economic analysis revealed that certain options could be economically viable.
