Environmental regulations increase the demand for filtration media with enhanced properties. Layers of submicron fibers are an appropriate structure to face this demand. The surface of the structure is increased in the same proportion as the diameter of fibers is decreased. Electrospinning of polymer melt is a solvent-free and environmentally-friendly method to produce layers of these fine fibers (diameter < 1 m). Hence, in an interdisciplinary research project ITA and DWI managed to develop a multi-jet spinneret for melt electrospinning. The results of the project have highlighted the potential to produce mechanically stable nonwovens with layers of submicron fibers from melt.
