Argonne National Laboratory developed the Multiport cylindrical dryer to increase heat transfer capacity of drying cylinders used in the production of paper and paperboard. A prototype unit was designed and manufactured for testing in a pilot paper dryer at the Kadant Johnson W.R. Monroe Research Center in Three Rivers, Michigan, USA.

Testing was conducted to compare the performance of the Multiport cylindrical dryer prototype to Kadant Johnson Turbulator® Tube dryer bars, as representative of the best available alternative technology to enhance heat transfer of paper dryers. The tests were performed on a 1.5 meter diameter pilot paper dryer at speeds ranging from 600 to 760 mpm. The pilot dryer has a 6.4 meter face width.

The Multiport cylindrical dryer was found to produce heat transfer rates that were slightly higher than those produced by the dryer bars, but the Multiport dryer required steam blow through flow rates that were appreciably higher to achieve these higher heat transfer rates.
