Buckman has developed a proprietary water-based solution of ammonia compounds that is an EPA registered pesticide for use in the pulp and paper industry and has the FDA allowance of 21CFR§176.170. It is combined with bleach on-site to form a stable solution of monochloramines (MCAs). When compared with chlorine dioxide, hypochlorous acid or hypobromous acid, MCAs are considered weak oxidants. Thus, MCAs have no impact on dyes, size, retention aids, or most other paper additives. They are highly effective at penetrating biofilm and reducing microbial populations. Monochloramine can be used for all paper grades and at a pH of 6.5 or greater. Application points are customer-specific, but typically include both thick- and/or thin-stock, and white water. Total chlorine residuals and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) testing are typically used to monitor a monochloramine program. Case histories will be presented demonstrating marked improvement in paper machine runnability, breaks, and downtime related to microbiological deposits.
