There are dozens of different types of paper grades produced by the global paper industry. Tissue and towel grades are very unique and thus they require specialized paper machine technology that is different than machines making flat grades of paper. There are many different processes in a tissue plant. One of the key components is the tissue machine which has evolved over the years. The machine design will depend on site specific details such as the type of furnish, the end product, converting process and the end use. The majority of new tissue machines are of the crescent former type design while premium grades are made with through air drying technology (TAD). This paper will provide an overview of the main tissue machine types, their key components and the products they make.
