Alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) emulsions are very prone to hydrolysis reactions and, therefore, always need to be emulsified on site shortly prior to use. To achieve adequate particle size for sufficient sizing effect and emulsion stability, high shear emulsification units are commonly needed. On the other hand, emulsification can be done using lower shear forces if ASA that contains surfactants is used. However, the use of surfactants may lead to reduced sizing effect.
The influence of ASA modification and the use of various polymers on the emulsion characteristics and sizing efficiency were studied. The results indicated that new modified ASA product can be emulsified by using a variety of different polymers. Tested emulsions had a superior particle size distribution facilitating excellent sizing effect and emulsion stability. Furthermore the strength properties of the end product can be improved by using a new stabilizer polymer. By using these new approaches, emulsification of ASA can be flexibly done using either low or high shear equipment and ASA sizing becomes economically feasible option also for smaller paper machines. In addition, the composition of the ASA emulsion can be considerably adjusted.
