Greater sheet bulk, i.e. an increase in caliper while maintaining basis weight or maintaining caliper as basis weight is decreased, offers several opportunities in printing and writing paper production. Sheet void volume can be increased and caliper can be maintained with less fiber. Greater sheet bulk allows book manufacturers to maintain the overall thickness of a book with fewer pages. Higher bulk increases opacity and decreases ink show-through. Use of fillers such as GCC and PCC or recycled fiber, which tend to lower sheet bulk, can be increased.
Case studies will be presented which describe a functional chemical treatment to increase sheet bulk and/or bulk resiliency (minimized caliper reduction from pressing and calendering) by wet end application with minimal impact on other papermaking properties.
