In this study parameters affecting the initial dewatering at the shoe and blade gap former have been studied. The results are based on a novel technique that directly measures the development of the stock thickness at the forming shoe between two fabrics. The results showed that the forming shoe dimensioning had a significant effect on the development of the stock thickness along the forming shoe. Dewatering was improved, if the forming shoe vacuum or the fabric tension was increased. Web consistency at the trailing edge of the forming shoe was found to be independent of the basis weight. Changing the jet/wire ratios did not cause any measurable differences in the dewatering rates.
