Camera based inspection and web monitoring systems for paper have been available for over 20 years. Similar to many computer and camera driven technologies significant advancements have been developed that provide to the end user solutions that have higher ROI’s (Return on Investment) at a lower total cost of ownership. End customers (internal and external) are also demanding inspection on more grades and value- add positions within the paper manufacturing and converting processes. The improved performance of camera systems (including the integration of traditional web inspection with web monitoring) at lower installed costs has moved this technology into a ‘must have’ category for machines that would not have considered this only years ago. This paper provides an overview of these recent developments by discussing key application scenarios across the entire paper production cycle (paper machine, value add processes, converting and final packaging)
