Tissue pressure rolls have traditionally been covered with rubber elastomers due to rubber’s high heat resistance and durability. Historically, rubber covers were designed that could provide a uniform nip, resulting in high quality tissue being produced at very high speeds. Some of the disadvantages of rubber covers when compared to polyurethane is their hardness instability (hardening), lower abrasion resistance, and higher operating temperatures. Recent advances in polyurethane chemistry now permit the use of these elastomers to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks.
