The OQP, OQ(PO)and OLQP (O is oxygen delignification, Q a chelating treatment, P hydrogen peroxide stage, (PO) oxygen and peroxide stage, L (laccase mediator treatment) bleaching sequences have been applied to oil palm frond soda-anthraquinone pulp. Oxygen delignification resulted in a delignification degree of approximately half of the Kappa number. Comparison of OQP and OQ(PO) sequence with 2% H2O2 in P stage, OQ(PO) sequence could improve brightness from 75.2% ISO to 82.3% ISO. TCF bleaching sequence involving laccase was also suitable for the frond pulp. It indicated that laccase has a good bleachability. Short beating in PFI refiner (about 2000) was sufficient to attain good pulp strength of TCF bleached pulp. The results of this study indicate that soda-anthraquinone pulping and TCF bleaching is a convincing alternative to produce high-quality pulp from oil palm frond for writing and printing paper.
