The online measurement of macrostickies and light macrocontaminants in an old corrugated container (OCC) recycling mill is reported. With determinations performed every 15 min, the image analysis-based macrocontaminant analyser showed variations in the number and area of heavy macrostickies and light macrocontaminants in final pulps serving as furnish for both brown and white grades of board. Sometimes, shortly after peaks in macrocontaminants, paper machine runnability issues were noted. Such information identified problematic furnish and process operation conditions and may eventually allow control of passivation and cleaning agents. Within a short 3-day period in the manual mode of the unit, the analyser was able to survey and determine the macrocontaminant removal efficiency for each of the mill’s fine screens, disperser, hydrocyclones and flotation columns units. Following the survey information, the mill is presently looking at new strategies to optimize their macrocontaminant removal equipment. The analyser output expressed as number and area of macrocontaminants show a linear relationship with the TAPPI official method T277 om-07. Images of the individual contaminants are shown with validation of their composition by FTIR.
