Recycled paper production generates a great number of residues when the ink, stickies and other contaminants are removed during deinking operations. However, rejected fractions still contain some sufficiently clean fibres, fibre fines and fillers. The aim of this work was to study the recovery of long fibres from fine screening reject that contains a considerable amount of contaminants, such as stickies and dirt specks, among long fibres. Recovery of long fibres was studied by means of laboratory flotation experiments for untreated and low consistency (LC) dispersed fine screening reject samples. Results show that the LC dispersion prior to flotation enables high removal of contaminants at the flotation stage. Thus, there seems to be an opportunity to purify the fine screening reject up to levels where the reuse of the fibre fraction would become possible without degrading the end product quality.
