Neutral to near neutral deinking has been a goal of newsprint deinking operations for decades. Recently a near neutral deinking program not using sodium sulfite was introduced to the recycle plant. This paper will discuss the performance of the new deinking program with respect to deinking performance based on ink removal and brightness, yield and cost savings. An added benefit was reduced deposit issues at the paper machine as a result of removing sodium hydroxide from the pulper chemistry.
